Bollywood for Beginners

Jab We Met
I have a big passion for Hindi films (Indian cinema), and I’m always happy to introduce new people to this wonderful world also known as Bollywood!

It would be very easy for me to fill tens of pages with information about the films and things more or less related to them, but there is nothing that could possibly replace your own experience of actually watching a film and finding out for yourself. I’m only going to give you three simple pieces of advice:

  • Watch films for entertainment, not critical evaluation.
  • Keep in mind that Hindi films tend to operate on a level of emotional logic, rather than “common logic” :)
  • Enjoy!

Below you’ll find a list (in no specific order) of my personal recommendations for people who are new to and curious about Hindi cinema. The smileys give you an idea of what sort of mood the film has, and I’ve added links to IMDb so you can find out more about the details.

Ngh… Keeping this list short is making my head explode, so here are the shortlisted ones as well: Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Veer-Zaara, Eklavya, Om Shanti Om, Luck By Chance, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Jodhaa Akbar, Mr and Mrs Iyer, Salaam Namaste, Kal Ho Na Ho, Parineeta, Don (2006), New York, Socha Na Tha, Hum Tum and Karam.

For more information about where you can buy or watch Hindi films, please see my Confessions page.

Want to know more? There is an absolutely brilliant website and community dedicated to clueless fans of Hindi films. It answers most questions a beginner might have, so I won’t go into those details here. Instead I’ll invite you to visit BollyWHAT? and join the BollyWHAT? Forum.

And if you still have questions or would like some more personal recommendations, feel free to contact me by leaving a comment or sending me an email. No question is too unimportant och silly, so don’t be shy..!
