Imtiaz Ali: 17 Movies To Die For…

Imtiaz Ali

There was an article in the Bombay Times section of The Times Of India (Mumbai) yesterday, where Imtiaz Ali lists »17 movies to die for«. I’m reposting it here, because I’ll definitely be trying to look up all of the ones I haven’t already seen :)

I watched the Tamil film Mounam Pesiyadhe today. I don’t really have much positive to say about it, except that Surya was in it, so I’ll just post a few random screenshots. Enjoy :)

Indian Deities and Heroes

Surya in Aaru

Surya in Aaru

The picture above is a screenshot from the Tamil film Aaru, starring Suriya. In this scene Suriya’s character Aaru is at a Vinayaka (also known as Ganesh) temple, taking a ritual bath.

I started watching this film yesterday – which was my birthday – so when the subtitles were a few seconds out of sync in the first few scenes this gave me a really good, delighted laugh :)

It also made me think of Indian street stalls, the kind where they sell postcards, stickers, posters etc. They always have an interesting and colourful variety of pictures on display, and you’ll find that paintings of deities and photos of movie stars (“heroes”) are often sitting next to each other. This was one of the first signs that I noticed during my first visit to India some years ago, when I was only beginning to explore Indian cinema; and it’s one of the things that quickly made me realise just how deeply revered and respected movie stars are among Indian people, and how incredibly important cinema is as an invaluable part of Indian culture.

Suriya in Nandhaa

I took some random screenshots of Surya in the Tamil film Nandhaa, after watching it the other day. It’s a good film, quite sad too. The ending however, I didn’t like at all… :( It sort of left the story off balance, somehow. Suriya is such an amazing actor, I always thoroughly enjoy watching him… :)

Enjoy!

I’m Deteriorating

I'm deteriorating.

»I'm deteriorating.«

This is a still from one of the funniest scenes in the film Dil Kabaddi. Irrfan Khan’s character (the guy doing a headstand) is a married man who is just about to cheat on his wife. He panics, and in an attempt to calm himself down he desperately starts doing some pranayama and a couple of yoga asanas. His line »I’m deteriorating,« and how he delivers it… hehe, it absolutely cracks me up, every single time! :)

This is such a nonsense post if you haven’t seen the movie, haha… sorry about that :)

Shahid & Priyanka in Kaminey

Twitter can be such a wonderful place at times, especially if you’re following people like Shahid Kapoor. Just look at this series of tweets that he posted from Edinburgh, Scotland, tonight:

Life never seizes to surprise ….. Never say never

Change is the only constant I guess.

‘The chocobar’ the best solution for an emotionally draining day … Fully recommended

Stealing a bite from another …… Even better

Awww… That’s the most delicious thing I’ve heard in a very long time, love it! There’s got to be a story there… ;) He’s awesome in so many ways

The Celebration Inside

Hrithik Roshan

Dance is just an expression of the celebration you feel inside. I respect a dancer who does not care about looking stupid and dances for the sheer pleasure of expression.
